November 2025

A new analysis presented at the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2025 has raised concerns about the long-term use of melatonin supplements for sleep.

Researchers reviewed health data from more than 130,000 adults with chronic insomnia and found that those who used melatonin for a year or longer were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with heart failure, require hospitalization, or die from any cause compared to non-users.

While the study cannot prove cause and effect, it highlights a potential safety issue with the widespread use of melatonin as an over-the-counter sleep aid.

“Melatonin supplements may not be as harmless as commonly assumed,” said Dr. Ekenedilichukwu Nnadi, the study’s lead author. “If our findings are confirmed, doctors may need to rethink how they counsel patients about sleep support.”

What This Means for Sleep Health

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Supplements can be helpful short-term, such as for jet lag, shift work, or temporary insomnia.

However, experts now caution against using melatonin daily or long-term, especially without medical supervision.

The study’s results align with what many holistic practitioners have long advised: rather than relying on a single supplement, improving sleep quality often requires addressing stress, mindset, and lifestyle factors that disrupt rest.

🌿 Natural Alternatives to Support Better Sleep

If you struggle with restless nights or racing thoughts, there are safe, sustainable options to explore from calming herbs like chamomile, valerian, lemon balm, and passionflower to minerals such as magnesium glycinate and mindfulness practices like meditation or bedtime journaling.

Summary

Melatonin remains a valuable short-term aid when used carefully, but new findings suggest it’s not a long-term solution. Building healthy sleep patterns naturally, through stress management, consistency, and gentle herbal support may be the safer and more sustainable path to deep, restorative rest.
